Tom Nancollas is a building conservationist whose passion for the isolated rock lighthouses of Britain and Ireland led to this beautifully observed book, Seashaken Houses: A Lighthouse History from Eddystone to Fastnet.
Twenty of these towers were built between 1811 and 1905, their foundations built on rock formations in the middle of the sea, Fastnet being the last and biggest lighthouse of them all.
Tom follows the dream of them, the ingenuity of those who built and restored them in the most hostile conditions and the communities in the hinterland that supported them.
