Tower Bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales (the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). On 30 June 2019, Tower Bridge marks its 125th anniversary with celebrations taking place inside and outside of the Bridge throughout the entire weekend. Find out what’s on and how you can join the festivities:
£1.25 Entry and Souvenir Bookmark
To mark the occasion, entry to Tower Bridge will be specially priced at £1.25 on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June for all. Visitors will also receive a one-off specially designed souvenir bookmark to keep, which gives the holder £5 off when purchasing the official Tower Bridge book in the Gift Shop. Please note, tickets cannot be booked in advance so make sure you arrive early.
Meet the Victorians
Costumed performers will populate the Bridge during the anniversary weekend, re-enacting scenes which (might have) happened during the construction and in the run-up to the Bridge’s opening. Victors will meet historic figures including the Bridge’s first (and only) Indian engineer, the divers who dug the foundations beneath the Thames and the Bridge’s first female employees.
Tower Bridge: A history in pictures
Discover a new photographic exhibition in Tower Bridge’s high-level Walkways showcasing rare archival images and new photography taken from the official 125th anniversary book, illustrating this best-loved landmark.
Family Activities
Join our free family activities and learn how, when Tower Bridge lifted for the very first time on 30 June 1894, a flotilla of boats queued up to be among the first to pass underneath. Families are invited to help build our own fleet of ships to recreate this historic moment. Once you’ve created a boat, don’t forget to visit Tower Bridge architect, Sir Horace Jones’ big birthday bash in the Engine Rooms, celebrating 200 years since his birth.
Limited Edition Souvenirs
Why not remember the occasion with a specially created souvenir to commemorate the anniversary, available from the Tower Bridge shop located in the Engine Rooms.
Around Tower Bridge
If you’ve ever wondered what Tower Bridge could have looked like, a brand new-installation on the piers of the Bridge, ‘Tower Bridge – What If?’ offers a fascinating glimpse at some of the alternative river crossing designs presented by over 50 architects and engineers to the City of London’s special committee.
And, eagle-eyed visitors to the Bridge will see gold flags flown on the control cabins of Tower Bridge throughout 125th anniversary celebrations.
