Julia Shaw: Making Evil

  7:15 pm - 8:30 pm

A criminal behaviour expert picks your brain

Join Julia Shaw as she delves into the darkest depths of the human psyche, and discover what science can teach us about the link between human psychology and acts of evil. In conversation with Vincent Walsh, professor of human brain research at University College London. Julia Shaw's new book, Making Evil: The Science Behind Humanity’s Dark Side draws from serial murderers, terrorism, and technology, to grapple with moral dilemmas, and whether evil is inherent or learned. She might just help you make sense of the world, your mind, and that suspect Google search history, delivered with a light hearted, accessible tone, and accompanied by illustrations.
Dr Julia Shaw is a scientist in the Department of Psychology at University College London, and has spent her career examining the different ways to look at and understand criminal behaviour. An expert in her field, she has worked on criminal cases and regularly delivers police-training. She has also cofounded Spot, a memory science and artificial intelligence start-up. Spot helps employees report workplace harassment and discrimination, empowering organisations to build a more inclusive and respectful work environment. Her work has been featured in outlets such as CNN, the BBC, The New Yorker, WIRED, Forbes, the Guardian and Der Spiegel. Vincent Walsh is Professor of human brain research at University College London. He has published over 300 papers, several specialist books, and leads the Applied Cognitive Neuroscience group in the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. His lab currently specialises in sleep across the life cycle, human brain stimulation, and decision making under pressure in sport and industry.
