In late-medieval England, the Anglo-Saxon period was regarded by many people as primitive and hardly civilised. With the Reformation, however, it suddenly became politically useful to look back nostalgically to a time of English independence from Europe before 1066. Christopher de Hamel discusses Matthew Parker (1504-1575), the former Archbishop of Canterbury who gathered a library of many of the oldest books in England in order to demonstrate the distinctive Englishness of the the reformed Church, and whose collection of Anglo-Saxon manuscripts marks the very beginning of a modern sense of British national identity. Christopher de Hamel was Fellow Librarian of the Parker Library, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, 2000-2016. His many books include Meetings with Remarkable Manuscripts (2016).
