This talk by Professor Laura Gowing will examine the part women played as mistresses to apprentices in the late 17th century guilds, by looking at the lawsuits that ensued when training contracts broke down, involving arguments over bad manners, theft, violence, and sloppy sewing. The detailed stories of what went wrong are one of our best sources for what apprenticeship was meant to be like for girls, who were a small but significant proportion of London’s apprentices. Includes wine reception.
Refunds will only be given if places are cancelled more than 48hours prior to an event (minus the booking fee) or if an event is cancelled by GHL.
