This UK Parliament Week, the UK Parliament Education and Engagement Service are hosting a series of Jubilee Room talks, free to anyone who wants to find out more about how the UK Parliament works, and how to get involved.
Presented by James Ford and Emma Traherne
Come and find out about the stories behind the Art and Historic Collections at the Houses of Parliament. From the iconic items in the Chambers, which are broadcast around the world, to the treasures hidden behind closed doors. Hear from the experts about how they manage, care for and conserve unique items of furniture, wonderful wall paintings and intricate mosaics.
James Ford (Assistant Curator, Parliamentary Art Collection) will discuss the joys and challenges of caring for the some 9,000 sculptures, paintings and other works that decorate the Houses of Parliament. Many of these objects are of national and international significance, such as the vast wall paintings of the battles of Trafalgar and Waterloo which are currently undergoing conservation.
Emma Traherne (Collections Manager, Historic Collections) will shed light on a few of the 11,000 items of historic furniture and decorative arts in use throughout the Houses of Parliament. Including recent conservation work on the Pugin designed throne and ongoing research into specific groups of furniture such as the 1950s Gilbert Scott designs.
There are limited places at this event and places are available on a first come first served basis. If a waiting list is formed then this will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, places are non-transferable.
