Living with the Gods: 40,000 Years of Peoples, Objects and Beliefs - A Talk with Neil MacGregor

This event has finished Took place on: Monday, 24th Sep 2018

 £13

The Very Reverend Andrew Nunn, Dean of Southwark in partnership with publisher Penguin Random House are delighted to host this talk by Dr Neil MacGregor on his new publication Living with the Gods: 40,000 Years of Peoples, Objects and Beliefs.

A panoramic exploration of peoples, objects and beliefs over 40,000 years from the celebrated author of A History of the World in 100 Objects and Germany, following the BBC Radio 4 documentary and British Museum exhibition which runs until Spring 2018.

No society on Earth lacks beliefs about where it has come from, its place in the world, and the connection of individuals to the eternal. Neil MacGregor's dazzling new book traces how different societies have understood and articulated their place in the cosmic scheme. He brilliantly turns his kaleidoscope of objects, monuments and ideas to examining mankind's beliefs - not from the perspective of institutional religions, but by focusing on the shared narratives that have shaped our societies, and our relationships with each other.

'The new blockbuster by the museums maestro Neil MacGregor ... The man who chronicles world history through objects is back ... examining a new set of objects to explore the theme of faith in society' Sunday Times

The Dean of Southwark will host an audience Q&A session after the talk and Dr MacGregor will be signing copies of his publication Living with the Gods: 40,000 Years of Peoples, Objects and Beliefs which will be on sale.

Neil MacGregor was Director of the National Gallery, London from 1987 to 2002 and of the British Museum from 2002 to 2015. His previous books include A History of the World in 100 Objects, Shakespeare's Restless World and Germany: Memories of a Nation, all published by Penguin. In 2010 he was made a member of the Order of Merit, the UK's highest civil honour. He is now Chair of the Steering Committee of the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.
