Science-policy interface: How research staff can contribute & why we should

This event has finished Took place on: Monday, 2nd Jul 2018

 Free

Have you thought about how you can increase the impact of your research? Or are you thinking about career opportunities beyond academia?
Demonstrating research impact is an increasingly important aspect of research funding criteria, yet sometimes it is not clear how our research can have an effect outside of academia. Similarly, decision makers require up-to-date knowledge in order to draft evidence-based policy but may be unaware of current research. The science-policy interface acts to enable access to expert, independent scientific advice and facilitate advocacy of issues important to the scientific research community.
This event will bring together experienced science-policy professionals from different settings – parliament, learned societies, funders, and universities – to introduce researchers to how science-policy works and how our research can inform policy-making. Following a number of short talks, there will be a panel discussion, Q&A session, and a catered event that will give those attending an opportunity to network with policy professionals and other research staff from across the university.
The event is free and open to all types of research staff (e.g. postdoctoral researchers, research associates/fellows, technicians) at all stages of their career within any discipline at QMUL.

Programme:
"An introduction to the policy making process"
 QMUL Centre for Public Engagement.
“Science-policy in Westminster”
Dr Lorna Christie, Physical Sciences Advisor at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.
“Role of the learned societies in policy formation”
Rebecca Purvis, Head of Public Affairs at The Royal Society.
“The influence of research funders on science-policy”
Dr Ben Bleasdale, Policy Advisor at The Wellcome Trust.
“Academia and science-policy”
Dr Hollie Chandler, Senior Policy Analyst at Russell Group of Universities.

Panel discussion with practical advice about communicating science in policy circles, science-policy career opportunities, and a Q&A session.
A catered networking event.
