A mobile carnival of music, song, dance and colour will launch the Boishakhi Mela. The streets will be alive with imaginative depictions of nature’s wonders, reflecting this year’s theme – the Six Seasons of Bangladesh.
The Bengali year begins with sun-drenched summer in April, moves into the magic of the monsoon in June, followed by the fresh air of autumn, happiness of harvest in late autumn, the warmth of winter and sweet fruits of spring.
Flora and fauna representing each season will be on show and children will carry a pictorial array of flowers, birds, moths and butterflies.
Floats will include the magnificent tiger, the mighty elephant and the proud peacock, who, with his extravagant plumage, will be ‘strutting’ at the head of the procession.
The parade starts at 11am in Buxton Street, by Allen Gardens. It turns left on to Brick Lane, left again on to Old Montague Street, then on to Vallance Road before arriving at Weavers Fields for 12noon to officially open the event.
