Around the World in 80 Trees with Jonathan Drori

Around the World in 80 Trees with Jonathan Drori

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 6th Jun 2018

Calling all nature lovers. Join us as Jonathan Drori talks about his new book Around the World in 80 Trees.

Trees are one of humanity’s most constant and varied companions. From India’s sacred banyan to the fragrant cedar of Lebanon, they offer us sanctuary and inspiration – not to mention the raw materials for everything from aspirin to maple syrup.

Jonathan Drori uses plant science to illuminate how trees play a role in every part of human life, from the romantic to the regrettable, to the downright ridiculous. Stops on the trip include the lime trees of Berlin’s Unter den Linden boulevard, which intoxicate amorous Germans and hungry bees alike, the swankiest streets in nineteenth-century London, which were paved with Australian jarrah wood, and the Japanese Lacquer tree, whose sap has been used not only for some of the world’s most beautiful man-made objects but also by a sect of monks to mummify themselves while still alive.
Full of fascinating historical and scientific detail, we'll learn how trees play surprising roles in every part of human life.

Tickets £4 (redeemable against the cost of Around the World in 80 Trees) includes a glass of wine / soft drink.
