Join Norman Balon, the legendary landlord of Soho’s most infamous drinkery, and Michael Heath the equally legendary satirical cartoonist for an extremely rare and historic evening of conversation, stories, questions, answers and possible political incorrectness.
The evening will be ‘refereed' by Soho denizen, actor and writer Celine Hispiche, ‘the only barmaid Norman ever bought a drink for'.
At 8pm on Monday May 29th 2006, London's longest serving and rudest landlord Norman Balon called time on 63 years of service behind the bar of Soho’s The Coach and Horses. Over that time, the patrons he barred from the pub, all of whom repeatedly returned regardless, included Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Jeffrey Barnard, Peter O Toole, Spike Milligan, John Hurt, Lisa Stansfield among a myriad of other Soho notables and ne’er-do-wells. Along the way, Norman and the pub, name-hecked in countless obituaries of celebrated drunks and immortalised in the play ‘Jeffrey Barnard is Unwell’, became part of Soho history.
Born in 1935 in Bloomsbury, Michael Heath is a cartoonist whose work has appeared in Punch, Lilliput, The Evening Standard, The Evening News, The Guardian, The Spectator, The Independent, The Sunday Times, The Mail on Sunday, and Private Eye. He has been cartoon editor of The Spectator magazine since 1991 His strip 'Great Bores of Today' ran for nearly thirty years in Private Eye. He became a Soho society regular in the 1960s and was close friends with Lucian Freud, Jeffrey Bernard and Francis Bacon. His strip "The Regulars” featuring the regular customers of the Coach and Horses pub also ran in Private Eye and was used in the play, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell.
