The King's Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I

This event has finished Took place on: Thursday, 19th Apr 2018

 Free

The scandalous story of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, lover and alleged murderer of James I - Britain’s first Stuart King - in 1625.

The rise of the glamorous, charismatic Villiers from minor gentry to national prominence—sometimes eclipsing even the king—seemed to defy gravity. Combining art history, modern toxicology and long forgotten accounts from the period, this talk will explore the tragic life and mysterious death of James, and Villiers’s involvement in both.

Benjamin Woolley is an author and lecturer whose previous books include The Queen’s Conjuror, a biography of the mystic Dr John Dee and Savage Kingdom, about Jamestown, Britain’s first successful colony in North America. He has also written and presented documentaries for the BBC on subjects ranging from the history of board games to the rise of Singapore.
