Our Centenary Celebration of the making of Greater Romania (1918-2018) continues with an evocation of heroism and dedication of women on and behind the Western and Romanian fronts of the First World War. BBC journalist Kate Adie and professors Lucy Noakes (Essex University), Alin Ciupală (University of Bucharest) and Ecaterina Lung (University of Bucharest) will examine, in a talk moderated by RCI Director Dorian Branea, the multi-faceted impact made by women during the war and the way it forever changed the societies engaged in the greatest bloodbath Europe had known. Private view of documentary exhibition “Their battle: Women in the First World War”. With introductory remarks by Ambassador Dan Mihalache.
Professor Alin Ciupală’s latest book, “Romania during World War I. Allies, Opponents and Propaganda. An Illustrated History”, will also be launched as part of the event. Kate Adie, bestselling author and award-winning former BBC Chief News Correspondent, will offer autographs on her much-praised “Fighting on the Home Front: The Legacy of Women in World War One”.
The exhibition “Their battle: Women in the First World War” features documentary photography of British and Romanian women who contributed to the war effort both at home and on the front with a special focus on Queen Marie of Romania and the members of Scottish Women’s Hospitals (”The Grey Partridges”) who established a record number of hospitals on the Eastern front, including Romania. Photographic materials courtesy of Imperial War Museum, Scottish Women’s Hospitals, the National Archives of Romania, Peleş National Museum, Gorj County Museum and the private collection of prof. Alin Ciupală. Exhibition design by Radu Manelici.
