Do you live in a senseable city?

This event has finished Took place on: Monday, 19th Feb 2018

Architect and engineer Carlo Ratti will discuss how the layers of networks and digital information that blanket urban space are radically transforming the ways in which we understand and design cities.

This season, our International Architects lecture series features practitioners merging design with cutting-edge digital technologies. The second talk will be presented by Carlo Ratti, founder of architecture and design practice Carlo Ratti Associati and director of the Senseable City Laboratory at MIT.

In this talk, Ratti will discuss how the ever-increasing use of sensors and mobile devices in our everyday lives is creating a new way of understanding the built environment and how the tools used to design cities are changing in response to this.

Ratti’s Senseable City Laboratory is a research initiative dedicated to exploring and providing a critical perspective on technology’s impact on the design of the spaces around us. The group studies the particular ways in which cities are used and applies this knowledge to better utilise their resources and improve their design.

Ratti has been included in Wired magazine’s “Smart List: 50 people who will change the world” and his works have been featured in TIME magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year” list – with the Digital Water Pavilion (2007), and the Copenhagen Wheel (2014).

Cost: £12
