Roman Southwark Walk

This event has finished Took place on: Sunday, 15th Oct 2017

What did the Romans ever do for (and in) Southwark?

Join one of our Cathedral and Borough area guides, Neil Sinclair, on a fascinating guided tour to explore key parts of Roman Southwark which will change your views on Roman influence around the southern entrance to Londinium.

Excavations in Southwark have revealed that there was much more to Roman Southwark than previously thought. Grand merchants’ houses, large warehouses, waterfront jetties, industrial and commercial premises were all uncovered locally.

Southwark Cathedral’s outstanding discovery was a collection of Roman artefacts recovered from a well revealed under a cathedral crypt 40 years ago. On display in the cathedral for a limited period, learn of their probable significance to the inhabitants of second, third and fourth century Southwark, including why they might have been discarded hastily.

Explore our other Roman artefacts and connections before exploring some of the key Roman sites in Bankside and Borough, including the location of a prominent riverfront building found under the remains of Winchester Palace in Clink Street, the Crossbones burial site in Redcross Way and the sites of Roman discoveries near Guy’s Hospital and along Borough High Street.
Neil Sinclair has been a qualified Southwark Cathedral and Bankside guide for 10 years and frequently lead walks in the area, focussing on its general history and its connections with London's early purpose-built theatres, Shakespeare, Dickens and other literary figures including Geoffrey Chaucer. He is also a City of London Guide, City of Westminster guide and Greenwich Guide.

This walk will take 1.5 to 2 hours and starts from the Cathedral's Millennium Courtyard by the Refectory and finish back at Southwark Cathedral

Cost: £9
