The Future of Data in Public Life

How can our personal data be used to shape opinions, debates, and even win elections? Is big data threatening democracy? Who should we trust and what is the future of data in public life?

In this Data Debate, a panel of experts will discuss what the future of data in public life could look like.

Panel includes:

Timandra Harkness, Journalist and author of Big Data: Why Size Matters (chair)

Jonathan Bamford, Head of Parliament and Government Affairs at the Information Commissioner’s Office

Bernie Hogan, Turing Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute

Joanna Bryson, Reader, Computer Sciences, University of Bath & Affiliate, Princeton’s Center for Information Technology Policy

Maeve McClenaghan, Data journalist, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

Data Debates is a collaboration between the AHRC, the Alan Turing Institute, the British Library, and the ESRC and aims to stimulate discussion on issues surrounding big data, its potential uses, and its implications for society.
