Child Actors on the London Stage

On 13th of December 1600 Thomas Clifton was on his way to school in the City of London. He never made it.

He was abducted and taken to the Blackfriars Theatre where he was threatened with a beating if he did not train to become an actor. We know about this occurrence from the legal case which resulted from it. Thomas was returned to his father.

However, other boys taken in a similar way were never returned to their families. Dr Julie Ackroyd will tell you what happened next…
