Walking with GPS

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 11th Jan 2017

We use GPS technologies every day to find out where we are, order a cab or chat people up. When we think about this, most of our attention goes directly to the user interface of our chosen app. In fact, every time we use these technologies we are relying on a complex infrastructure of military satellites, ground antennas and electromagnetic signals which interacts in complex ways with our physical environment.
For this months Scibar, meet two researchers whose work helps us to reconceptualise our urban environments.
Chris Wood
Chris will be talking about a series of walking workshops he's developed, during which he got participants to turn their attention away from the experiences GPS supports and onto the satellites themselves, examining what emerges when we consider this form of naked infrastructure.Martin Austwick
Martin will be talking about Visualising Data - why you would do it, how you would do it, and what it tells us. Martin is a lecturer in data visualisation and data science for spatial systems, and has worked on data from cities, including bike share and GPS data, as well as visualising research networks at his home in UCL. He will try to show more pretty pictures than lines of code.
