IDinLondon - Beautiful Data & Displays

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 11th Jan 2017

January not only brings us a new year, but 2 new speakers!  We will be looking at data and how to make it beautiful.  We're being hosted by the chaps over at MarketInvoice in their nice new office in Shoreditch this time.  Bring yourself, bring a friend (but make sure they sign up), but most importantly don't bring Excel....!

Title: A guide on how to to never open Excel again and be merry!
Everyone sooner or later will need to make sense of a big blob of data. You might want to process, understand, and maybe produce some graphs out of it!This data normally comes in an excel spreadsheet or a CSV, and the go-to tool (OF THE PAST!) would be Excel (or one of its not-so-perfect open-source twins). If Excel and its mates give you headache and if you want to learn how to never ever ever ( I promise!) open it again, then come and listen to this talk. I will show you how to unleash the power of data analytics using the amazing Jupyter notebook, Python, the Pandas library & co. on various real life examples. You will learn how to get data from different sources, massage it and produce nice graphs from it.

Title: R Language: What is R? Why R? Why not R?
This talk will explore the origin and usage of the R programming language which is an important tool for development in the numeric analysis and machine learning spaces. According to the experts "R is the most popular language used in the field of statistics". It is free, open source, powerful and highly extensible environment which contains a lot of pre-packaged stuff. The R programmable environment uses command-line scripting which allows to design,  store and re-use a series of complex data-analysis in steps, which in turn makes it easier for others to validate research results and check for errors.  According to Tiobe's year-end ratings of language searches there was a noted increase in R language search popularity in 2014 and for comparison Java, PHP, and C++ remain highly popular but are dropping. And why not R? It can be daunting because R syntax is different from that of many other languages - “The language is actually fairly simple, but it is unconventional”.
