Remembering the Somme

One hundred years ago, on 1st July 1916, tens of thousands of British troops left their trenches and walked methodically towards the German machine guns positioned to slaughter them. While that day recorded the highest number of casualties in British military history, the Battle of the Somme dragged on into the autumn.

Westminster may not seem the place to remember the Somme. But from the Civil Service Rifles training in the courtyard of Somerset House, to the ambulances carrying the wounded out of Charing Cross station, to the corridors of Whitehall, there are echoes of the battle everywhere.
