Johnson and the Theatre: The case of Irene

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 9th Jan 2013

 Free

On re-reading his only dramatic work later in his life, Johnson pronounced that he 'thought it had been better'. Yet he made more money fromIrenethan from any of his previous literary endeavours.

This talk will explore the paradox of Johnson's play (described by one critic as an 'elaborate curiosity'), arguing that it was more successful than has generally been realised.Irenewill be situatedin the context of both Johnson's literary career and the eighteenth-century theatre world. The widely-held belief that Johnson held a predominantly negative view of the theatre will be challenged through a detailed exploration of his connections with theatre and its performers to reveal a man with a substantial interest in drama. To coincide with the recent cataloguing of the library at Dr Johnson's House, this talk will also feature the opportunity to look at some of the relevant books in the House's rich collection.
