About London Canal Museum

The museum where you can see inside a narrowboat cabin, learn about the history of London's canals, about the cargo carried, the people who lived and worked on the waterways, and the horses that pulled their boats.

This unique waterways museum is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862, and also features the history of the ice trade and ice cream as well as the canals.

Opening Hours

The museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays Times 10am to 4:30pm, last entry at 4pm.

The canal museum is closed on Mondays, except bank holiday Mondays.

I'd suggest maybe an hour, maybe two if you look take in their temporary exhibitions as well.

The canal trips run reguarly through the summer months, but yes, it's sensible to book in advance as they can sell out.

The underground ice well usually opens a couple of times a year, and it's best to check their website for dates.

Are there canal barges?

The museum is next to the Regent's Canal, and there are usually barges moored outside.
