Over the next couple of months, the Flying Scotsman steam locomotive will be hauling trains around London and the regions.
You can either be on board for some of the trips that still have tickets, or watch from the sidelines.
If watching from the sidelines, such as vantage points near the route, or local stations it passes through, the basic rules for railway photography are not to use a camera flash, and if in stations, not to use a tripod.
The timetable for the Flying Scotsman:
Thursday 20th May
A lunchtime loop through the Surrey Hills (sold out)
- Leaves London Victoria: 10:45am
- Returns London Victoria: 2:30pm
An evening loop through the Surrey Hills (tickets available)
- Leaves London Victoria: 5:50pm
- Returns London Victoria: 9:30pm
Sunday 6th June
A return trip to Southampton via Reading (tickets available)
- Leaves London Paddington: 09:45am
- Returns London Paddington: 9:45pm
Saturday 12th June
A return to Worcester via Reading and the Cotswold Hills (tickets available)
- Leaves London Paddington: 07:40am
- Returns London Paddington 8:10pm
Thursday 17th June
A return trip to Cambridge (tickets available)
- Leaves London King’s Cross: 08:20am
- Returns London King’s Cross: 9:10pm
Saturday 19th June
A return trip to York (tickets available)
- Leaves London King’s Cross: 06:40am
- Returns London King’s Cross: 10:15pm
Although the Flying Scotsman locomotive is rostered for the steam hauled sections of the trips, it cannot be guaranteed and may be substituted for a different engine.
A full list of other steam train trips in 2021 can be found here.

*yes, I know it’s a locomotive, but 99.999% of people call it a train. Get over it already.
Many thanks for the tip. I’m going to bag myself a ticket!
Does anybody know if it will be routed via the Hertford loop or the ECML on the Cambridge and York trips?
I am sure someone in the rail operator knows, but that information is not confirmed or made public until typically a week before the trip.
“Heading north to cross the Welwyn Viaduct” says the Steam Dreams site of the Cambridge outing on the 17th, so the ECML.
Railway Touring Co has changed the other (19th) outing to York-Edinburgh (+ return) only, so no go for Londoners.
Sorry, I’m wrong about Saturday: York-Edinburgh is ‘Tornado’, not ‘Flying Scotsman’.
For FS on Saturday, “follow the East Coast Main Line route of famous express trains of the past” is what they say.
Please can anyone tell me if the trip on June 6th from Paddington to Southampton and back again goes through Basingstoke? I just can’t find the exact route …..
That information is not confirmed or made public until typically a week before the trip.

Can you tell me if I have booked seats on the train please so I can book overnight stay
I remember in the early 1960s flying Scotsman coming to Old oak common shed because it was working special up to North Wales it looked most strange and out of place amongst Western engines happy days

I will definitely be riding this beautiful old train
Can someone tell me how the Flying Scotsman will get from Paddington to Kings Cross please.
No such journey is being planned.
Much clearer now we call locomotives trains.
Here’s a picture of the Flying Scotsman train being hauled by the Falcon train

That’s so much better than when we used to say Flying Scotsman train hauled by Falcon locomotive 🙂
Further to that, here’s the Flying Scotsman train and the Yorkshire Pullman train

Again, much clearer than when we used to say Flying Scotsman locomotive and the Yorkshire Pullman Train.
Does anyone know timings today for Dorking Deepdene please?
Please can anyone tell me the route of the Flying Scotsman tomorrow? I would like to see it on its return journey from Southampton to Paddington but can’t find where it will pass.
My father,George Smart, was a fireman on the Scotsman up until it was removed from service in the early 60’s. He sadly passed away Oct 2020. Can you purchase platform type access to Kings Cross on the 17th June. I have photos of him next to the Scotsman with his driver and would dearly love to say goodbye.Tony Smart.
