Back in 1960, the Midland Pullman was Britain’s first luxury high speed diesel-electric train, famous for the trains blue livery and the white jacketed stewards on board.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Midland Pullman, an Intercity 125 train has been redecorated in the same bold blue livery, and will be running tours around the UK. The first of these restored Midland Pullman tours will take place this coming Saturday (12th Dec), leaving St Pancras International in the morning for Crewe, and returning in the evening.
While the main appeal for passengers was the service on board, many more people on the sidelines watched for the bold blue train to rush past. There are still some tickets left to be on board, but if you want to watch the restored Midland Pullman service passing through North London, the estimated times are below.
The restored HST (High Speed Train) being used for the service is itself 46 years old and is the only one in preservation capable of speeds up to 125mph on the main line. It’s in the same striking Nanking blue livery with white trim of the original, with the crest on front, and is already turning heads on its trial trips.
If you want to watch, then the standard rules for stations apply, no flash on cameras and no tripods, otherwise be sensible. Alternatively, watch from suitable bridges over railways along the route.

I do like the famous livery. I’ve watched videos of this on YouTube. Does look really nice.
one day will i see the midland pulman for real the last time i saw it was coming through bath station with my uncle in the 1960s i have a model of it running in my loft the whole house layout i am now 69 yrs of age maybe before i die with all this covid about i will see it again for real
The distinctive styling of the original power cars is not being replicated, so the ‘new’ Midland Pullman is not really convincing. Still, it will no doubt provide plenty of interest for lots of people.
I do love a curmudgeon.
So, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of a service between London and Manchester, they ran a service between London and not-far-outside-London.
Thank you from Manchester.
The service ran all the way to Crewe — but naturally, this London focused website detailed the London area leg of the journey, just as for example, other regional publications focused on the journey times in their area of the country.
Maybe you should check facts — by clicking on the links in the article above — before moaning.
