The group working to return one of the old 1938 era tube trains from the Isle of Wight to London says that it has been given one of the trains.

The London Transport Traction Group (LTTG) says that it was informed by South Western Railway yesterday that their application for a Class 483 unit for preservation has been successful.

South Western Railway, which runs the Isle of Wight railway issued a formal invitation to take the old trains for preservation back in July, and the LTTG was set up to bring one back to London, ideally to be used on the Epping Ongar Railway.

A statement from South Western Railway sent to the LTTG stated that:

“I can confirm that you will have a unit for preservation. I can’t confirm which unit yet as the preservation committee have not given me a final answer but it is highly likely to be 483006 and if it is not then it will be 483008 (both of which are currently operational and in service).”

“In terms of timing – I expect we will be in a position to release the unit for collection around the end of the line closure in March.”

Once the train is bought to London, subject to their own fundraising campaign –  they aim to restore and run the train under its own power (battery or internal), rather than hauling it with a spare locomotive, which would give a true London Underground feel to the service. The Epping Ongar Railway is a heritage railway, but it runs on a section of former Central line track, so this will see a return of tube trains to an old tube track.

The LTTG is now seeking funding to bring the train back to London and restore it – details are here.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

The link behind “fundraising campaign” goes to a 404. I think it should be “donations-and-fundraising.html” rather than “pledges-and-fundraising.html”.

Close, but not quite returning “to London” as Epping and Ongar are both Essex :!

Standard and unpainted stock were the norms on the Epping to Ongar branch as I remember it, but it will be an excellent home for the 38s.
