London Underground’s unremarkable shed of a tube station at Colindale is set to be demolished and rebuilt with a dramatic curving wooden landmark for the area.
The funding for the new station is being met from the addition of 350 homes on the site, which has already in recent years seen clusters of new residential towers appearing on the landscape.
A total of £5 million in funding from TfL’s Growth Fund has been allocated for the new station building with step-free access and new pedestrian and cycle links. The project will cost in total some £22 million, so the remainder of the cost comes from the housing development.
TfL is proposing to build a tower for the homes, and a new station building with an enlarged ticket hall, ground floor commercial space and improvements to the surrounding area.
The intention is to expand Colindale tube station’s capacity to meet the expected addition of even more homes in the next few years as the former Met Police training grounds are filled up with residential blocks.
A consultation has opened into the plans, and planning is expected to be applied for by the end of this next month.
If approved, work could start in 2021, with the completion of the station rebuild in 2022.
A public exhibition for the proposals will be held at the nearby RAF Museum on:
- Thursday 6 December 2018 (14:00 – 20:00)
- Saturday 8 December 2018 (10:00 – 16:00)
Is it because £millions is to be spent by TfL on upgrading stations across London. Including making tube stations and railway station managed by TfL to become step-free accessible.
Great news for people who live in Colindale on the Northern Line Edgware branch which will see the station redeveloped and to be completed in 2022.
Instead of spending money on new, and unsightly, buildings like this, they need to use the money to keep fares down.
I’m surprised with all the neighbouring development they’re doing, they’re no going to built over the station itself.
The station Itself is going to be over the railway bridge – hence no building above it.
Is it going to have parking space?? As this is one of the most need it in colindale???
Hope not – there are too many car journeys in our polluted city already.
That’s great news . We need lift at this busy station . Station looking awful compare to all modern building around
That’s the other way round, the station looks unprepossessing compared with the hideously ugly modern buildings that surround it.
I lived in Colindale from 1951 to 1973 and remember seeing the bombed remains of the original, rather elegant, station and, as a kid, getting quite excited about the construction of the present block in the early ‘60’s. I don’t suppose it has worn well.
Simon, how do you know that? I know the area well but emailed Tfl as they are not including any plans or maps on their ‘consultation’, and so it’s impossible to see where the station is – certainly the CGI shown is not linkable to the current station. If you;re right then the two towers will be either side of the track which is tricky as there is only the current car park to the east and that is too small.
What a hideous carbuncle this design is. I bet Charles Holden is spinning in his grave. This ain’t the Colindale that I remember from when I lived in Booth Road. My late father, mother and Aunt lived there until 2000 and they said it was changing out of all recognition and not for the better.
