A planned upgrade of the railway station at Elstree & Borehamwood station is set to go ahead now that Thameslink has awarded the £1.5m contract.

The changes will see the existing building deepened to create space for 6 ticket gates instead of four, larger toilets, and two sets of entrances instead of just one.

While the ticket hall is being enlarged much of the space is being given over to a revamped coffee shop and an enlarged supermarket. An option for a 3rd retail kiosk (in the former toilets) also exists in the plans.

The new building will be deeper than the current one, as can be seen on the plans below, where the ticket barriers are in the same location on both drawings.

Thameslink also said that the ticket office will be reconfigured to prevent queuing passengers from blocking passengers passing through, but didn’t mention that the planning application also sees the ticket office shrink from two counters to one.

There will also be improved cycle parking facilities, but no additional space for more bicycles.

Planning permission was granted back in May, and construction of the enlarged ticket hall area is due to start later this month.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

I like the concept on how the new station entrance and building will look like once its completed. Elstree & Borehamwood station does need some improvement.

I wonder what coffee shop would be. Possibly Costa Coffee.

I hope at the same time they improve pedestrian access to/from the station – there are no ‘legit’ crossings to get from the station to the high st & industrial areas. The fit & able bodied take their chances, must be close to impossible if slower or in a wheelchair.

  3. Neil says:

A glaring issue with this new plan is that (from the drawings) you can walk off the station without passing through the barriers simply by going through the retail area?

Probably not. My guess is that there will be a central section in retail area 1 where customers coming through both door could be served, but not allowing them to pass through that area.

  4. Aleks says:

The side ‘retail’ area is an enlarged cafe with counter service from both platform and forecourt.

    How about free WiFi?
