Peckham’s own “highline” moves forward to being built

A mini-Highline is a step closer to be being built in Peckham following the completion of the crowdfunded feasibility process.

The Peckham Coal Line is a design for an elevated urban park built on disused railway sidings that run alongside the current Overground line, and dormant land between Peckham Rye and Queens Road Peckham.

Starting at Rye Lane on an abandoned rail track, it would run for 900m beside the existing railway line, dropping down into a nature reserve before finishing at Queens Road Peckham station.

Back in 2015, the organisers started raising funds for the feasibility study to be produced, which could then unlock the funding for the coal line to be built. The study has now been completed.

The project will likely be delivered in a number of different phases. Starting with the stable yard and the entrance from Queens Road we will work towards realising a section at a time whilst continuing to work-up in detail the whole route. CMA Planning have now secured planning for the first section of the Peckham Coal Line through the stable yard.

Later this month there will be a public presentation of the feasibility report and outlines of how to move the coal line towards being built. It’s also a chance to see inside the remarkable Peckham Rye Station’s waiting room.

    Great concept. Hopefully there is there will power to do this, especially at a time of pinched public coffers.

    Agree, not going to be a safe place, raised up from view in darker evenings, I wouldn’t walk there.

    Do look closely at the plans. A large part of the route is in fact at ground level. Part is already a piece of parkland alongside the railway embankment.
