Two tube stations, a train station, and a bit of tram track have all been given funding for upgrade works to commence.

All three upgrades tie in with new housing developments taking place right next to the stations, which is how the Growth Fund operates – part funded by TfL and part by local developers.

Colindale Station

The recently refurbished tube station at Colindale, close to the RAF Museum, will be rebuilt.

A total of £5 million in funding is for a new station building with step-free access and new pedestrian and cycle links. The project will cost in total some £22 million.

Illford Station

This station will gain a third entrance to cope with increased demand, and provide easier access for bus passengers alighting at stops along Ilford Hill.

Walthamstow Central Station

As previously reported, there are plans to open a second entrance at the station to relieve pressure on the Victoria line platforms.

In total, £15 million has earmarked for improvements to station to be delivered as part of the (controversial) redevelopment of Walthamstow Mall

Trams

TfL is also planning to double-track the short length of tram line along the Elmers End branch of the Croydon tram, and build a second platform at the terminus station.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Is there any news whether the new entrance at Walthamstow Central will have step-free access to the Victoria line?

If it is possible to do for a sane amount of money then I’m sure it will be

More and more single track and single platform bits of tram being doubled to increase service levels but no commitment yet to improvements in Croydon town centre where more capacity is desperately needed

    • Ian Visits says:

There’s been lots of talk about the town centre upgrades, it’s a case of funding (Westfield) and planning how to do it without closing down lots of streets during construction work.

I think Ilford TfL Rail station needs to be rebuilt. Plus the former bay platform (platform 5) which is closed off could be used as extra space or to be used a gardening area with seats installed.

  4. ZJ says:

Disappointing there’s no word of LU finishing it’s upgrade of Charing Cross station – the Trafalgar Square ticket hall remains in a dire state nearly two years after work was finished on the Northern line ticket hall.

  5. NL says:

What bout the new Carpenters Estate entrance at Stratford, and longer term a new ticket hall where the taxi rank is on meridian Square?
