The extension itself cost £1bn, Crossrail cost £15bn, so a design change costing an extra £240bn is hard to believe.
“I wouldn’t disagree that [not opening the station] is an option, I wouldn’t say if it was on the list”
This doesn’t make any sense.
It’s probably meant to be £240 million extra.
TfL should do the work until they run out of money from what was originally agreed, and if that means an unfinished station, then the station should remain closed.
I think we need an alternative to funding from the developer, as they always renege and use their size and influence to get away with not paying (or building) what they agreed to. Thing is, the small amount the developer does provide is provided up-front, whereas other options such as a levy on property sales/rentals on that development won’t raise money until afterwards.
The councils complaining about up front funding for Crossrail 2 by Mayor Khan should aim their fire at Chris Grayling who has changed the way Crossrail 2 needs to be funded from how Crossrail 1 was !
