That stone column to the Great Fire of London is holding a series of evening events during the autumn. Three events are planned, in the hours after the column normally closes to the public.
7th September – Bird watching from the top with David Lindo AKA The Urban Birder.
5th October – Stories with NTS storytelling radio show Nyx Chariot and storyteller Nell Phoenix. Stories via headphones as you climb to the top.
9th November – Poetry readings beginning in the piazza and ending on the viewing platform at the top of The Monument.
Tickets are £20 per person and can be booked here
In related news, there are plans to open up the observatory room that’s currently hidden in the base of the column, as the Monument was also designed for celestial observations, acting as a giant immobile telescope. That never worked out as planned, and the room has been pretty much empty ever since.
