A new western side entrance to Stratford station has been approved, which will see easier access to the station from the side streets to the north of Stratford High Street.
Once completed, the 500m journey that current Carpenters Estate residents have to walk from Gibbins Road to the Westbound Central Line Platform, will be reduced to 150m once the new entrance is open.
It would also offer an alternative route into the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
An intent to add a south-western entrance date back more than a decade, but it has taken this long to bring them to the point that they will be carried out.
The new public entrance will be added next to the Jubilee line platforms. There already is a staff entrance there, which leads out to what is currently a small car park, and the rubbish collection point.
The new entrance is planned to go alongside it, leading to a space carved out from the car park to provide a pedestrian plaza. The existing Network Rail car park next to it may also be added, at a later date.
The scheme will also see new lifts installed to allow step-free access throughout the station and the revitalisation and extension of a disused subway for better integration of rail, tube and DLR services.

The proposal was made by the LLDC, and Hawkins\Brown are the architects who have been commissioned to develop the plan.
Incidentally, while reading planning applications, it turned out that a plot of empty land next to the site is owned by none other than, HM The Queen, via the Crown Estate.
Finally a way to enter the Olympic Park from Stratford whilst avoiding Westfield!
True
Can you say where the new lifts / disused corridors are? I thought all of Stratford station was accessible although some access routes are convoluted (e.g. platforms 11 and 12).
If the Carpenters Estate is demolished, as must still be Newham’s aim, this’ll help boost house prices for the replacement blocks.
Where precisely is this? I can’t work it out!
“The new public entrance will be added next to the Jubilee line platforms.”
Great news for Icona Point residents as well! Well done!
You’ve described it as a new eastern entrance, but user it actually on the west?
Should say “isn’t it” – not “user”
Is there anywhere we can see where this will be on a map – trying to get my head around the location
Google Streetview suggests it’d be here:

I seem to remember that before the station was re-built there was a direct footbridge link to Carpenters Road.
Also, prior to 1974 when the Stratford Shopping Centre was built, a subway exited the station in the road leading to the High Road. This area (apart from Theatre Royal) was cleared for the shopping centre. The subway at the east end of Platform 3 (Central Line)has emergency exit doors in that position. You can see the original entrance with cream faience tiling from the platform and behind the taxi/coach layby. The subway was extended under the new road but became unsafe and eventually closed.

Do we have any update on this?
So, are they re-opening this old entrance as well?
