From royal hobby, through anarchism and violence, and now hipster cool, tattooing has had a rather curious history

And now its latest transformation is to become the subject of an exhibition at in a museum.

A huge screen shows a studio at work, and some seriously bored looking customers. It seems that having a tattoo might be fun, but getting one is an exercise in tedium.

The rest of the exhibition is split into two halves, the exhibition at the Museum of London looks back to the past, and also offers a look at today’s tattoo artists at work.

Also on display are newly commissioned artworks by tattooists from the featured studios: Lal Hardy at New Wave, Alex Binnie at Into You, Claudia de Sabe at Seven Doors and Mo Coppoletta at The Family Business.

The exhibition is free, at the bottom of the stairs by the front entrance (or the end of the museum if you go all around the displays).

It’s open until 8th May.

Get under the skin of London tattoo culture with an evening event on Monday 22 February, Tattoo London: under the skin or explore the tattooed body with an Art Macabre life drawing salon on Thursday 25 February and Wednesday 4 May.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for just over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, but doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether its a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what your read on here, then please support the website here.
