Tower Bridge has announced the first-ever public event to take place inside its subterranean Bascule Chamber.
As part of this year’s Totally Thames Festival, this cavernous space, hidden below river-level will be brought to life with live music performances taking place at intervals throughout the day on Saturday 26th September 2015 and Sunday 27th September 2015.
Using recordings of Tower Bridge’s very own lifting mechanisms, composer Iain Chambers, will create a bespoke brass and electronic piece of music for this special event. As road and river traffic rumbles on above their heads, the music will be played for the first time.
But what are the Bascule Chambers?
They are two vast quarter circle shaped rooms underneath the bridge where the massive counterweight swings into when the bridge is opened. Group tours can go in by arrangement, and they are an extraordinary sight.
As such, the concert may be subject to changes due to bridge openings, as the space would be most unwise location to be in when the counterweight comes down to crush you!

The Bascule Chambers can only be accessed by steep stairs and areas that are considered confined spaces. It is therefore not suitable for those with further accessibility needs.
