If you haven’t been to the Building Centre to have a look at their huge scale model of London, you might want to get along sharpish, as it is about to be replaced.
…and only a few months after it finally gained a model of The Orbit to sit next to the Olympic Stadium.
Fret not, for a replacement is being built — rather than adding bits piecemeal, they have decided to completely rebuild the model from scratch.
The New London Model, built by Pipers to a scale of 1:2000, will cover more of London to include areas such as Earls Court, White City and Old Oak Common.
Meanwhile, an interactive digital display system will tell the story of London’s historical and physical development from the Romans to the current times.
Key projects, including recently completed as well as proposed schemes with planning permission, will be highlighted.
The model will be previewed at MIPIM in March as the centrepiece of the London Stand, with the official launch at the Building Centre later this Spring.
However, if you want to see the model that has been delighting people for the past decade, you have until the end of June to do so.
It’s a fantastic model – if you’ve not seen it yet, well worth trying to get in a visit before it gets replaced.
Can you just turn up to access or is it visit by arrangement ?
I haven’t been for a while, but one could always just turn up and wander in. There’s often plenty of other things to see besides the model too.
What will happen to the old model? Will it be destroyed? There must be some London building looking for a unique feature for its lobby.
