There is one day of the year where you can be absolutely certain of a major military flypast over London followed by the Red Arrows — on The Queen’s official birthday in June.
Always worth watching from the ground, it’s also good to see from a high higher up — say from the top of a tall building.
Having been keeping an eye on the website, this morning, The Shard has started selling tickets to go up to their viewing platform on the 14th June 2014.
The flypast is usually at 1pm, so you will want to book noon or 12:30pm tickets.
As there is no limit on how long you can stay in the viewing area, it might be worth booking the noon slot, and then just before the 12:30 arrivals, get yourself into position and hog the spot!
The London Eye is also an option, but frankly, the cost difference is negligible, and the Eye is more of a risk to ensure you are right at the top of the rotation just as the flypast takes place.
Another much cheaper option is the top of the tower at Westminster Cathedral, and that does have the advantage of not photographing through glass.

Their route is likely to be the same every year — in via north-east London, over Shoreditch and the City, then wheeling back out over north-west London
