Something unusual tomorrow morning, a large cargo ship is to pass through Tower Bridge for a ceremonial naming event. It’s fairly rare for large cargo ships to pass through the Bridge now, save for the City of London’s waste containers and the occasional construction barge, and the ship in question this time is BIG.

Very BIG in fact.

Subject to favourable weather conditions on the day, and with a beam of 25.2m, MS Adeline will pass through Tower Bridge to be christened while moored alongside HMS Belfast.

To put it into context, the cruise ship, Silver Cloud which can squeeze through has a beam (width) of 22 metres. So this cargo ship is wider – if not as tall. About the same length though.

It’s a rare sight and one which may appeal to photographers.

She is due to pass through Tower Bridge at 8:45am and leave at midday.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for just over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, but doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether its a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what your read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you
