If you like taking photos of fireworks, and have a camera that is at all larger than a mobile phone, then the evening of Sun 5th Feb will be right up your street.
Well, right up a hill more accurately.
There will be a firework display right next to the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich at 6pm and will last for around 15 minutes. The river navigation notice from the PLA says that barges (note the plural) will be moored in the middle of the river for the display.
That means, anyone with a suitable camera/zoom lens who hikes up the hill to the Greenwich Observatory will get some pretty amazing photos of the historic college, the fireworks and Canary Wharf.
Alternatively, you might be able to find a suitable spot closer to the fireworks (the official location is Pepys Lawn) or on the northern side, on the the Isle of Dogs.
Nothing on the ORN website about something happening that evening, but there are details on Greenwich.co.uk. The event is to mark the back-patting exercise in becoming a Royal Borough.
I thought Greenwich politicians didn’t like fireworks? OK, that churlishness aside, decent sized firework display and next to some impressive buildings.
It’s a photographers delight.
You certainly would get some great photos from the vicinity of the observatory, if only the park wasn’t closed at 6 p.m.
Oh, didn’t realise that – just checked with them and they wont open late that night. How very annoying.
Updated below – they will now be open until 6:30pm

Greenwich – Sunday 5 February
View pages in this section
Greenwich will be hosting the finale event on Sunday 5 February.
Free entertainment – including historical-themed interactive performers, musicians and costumed characters – and children’s arts workshops will be hosted in and around Greenwich Market and the National Maritime Museum from 10am until 5.30pm.
Also from 10am, the Discover Greenwich visitor centre will host an exhibition of the Letters Patent, a document formally confirming the borough’s royal status and signed by The Queen. There will also be a Royal Greenwich exhibition from the Heritage Centre on display, and royal-themed talks and walks.
The Pepys Lawn in front of the Old Royal Naval College will host a music stage featuring top performers from 2pm until 6pm.
The day will culminate in a costumed parade involving schools and community performers at 5.30pm. The parade will travel via College Approach and arrive on the Pepys Lawn in front of the Old Royal Naval College at 5.55pm.
The fireworks will be followed by a stunning music and fireworks finale on the lawn at 6pm. The event will end at 6.15pm.
Cheers for posting – I love a good firework display and so does my Nikon!
Royal Parks Agency confirmed today that they’ll say open until 6.30PM on Sunday February 5th for the fireworks. It’s a photographers dream!
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the suggestion of where to stand for this event; a great view with and without fireworks.
