Steam trains in North and South West London while not commonplace, aren’t rare – but a steam train in East London is exceptionally so, and tomorrow (Sat 10th Dec) is a chance for people in this side of the city to see one charge by.

The Cathedrals Express is running from Southend-on-Sea to Southampton — via Upminster, Gospel Oak and Hounslow — and back along the same route – so you can watch the train twice if you want.

The locomotive doing the pulling will be the 60 year old Britannia class 70000.

Steam trains appeal to most people from train geeks to children, so something to look out for either at the stations along the route, or if you know a good vantage point near the railway tracks.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

I waited lineside between Blackhorse Road and South Tottenham. Either it was running late or I was on the wrong bit of track as I only saw four DMUs before I got cold and went home.
