Bacchanalian Xmas Tree Lights

Ever since I was a kid, I have always liked the aesthetics of liquor bottles and some years ago I came up with the idea of making up some Christmas Tree lights based on miniature bottles of spirits.

That original light set broke, but recently it was remade and I have put them up tonight.

Being quite heavy, they can’t really be used on Xmas trees, so I tend to loop them over the curtain pole. Looks nice, although I then cannot close the curtains while they are in place. Not a problem unless it gets very cold, as it is erm expected to this weekend. Oops.

If you want to make a set for yourself, the internal lighting is just an ordinary set of plain Christmas tree lights. Once the bottles are emptied – and you are presumably sobered up – the easiest way to fit the lights in the bottles is to use a pair of small scissors to cut the tin foil bottle cap almost in half.

Then nick the top a bit to create a hole for the electric wire.

Put the light into the bulb and fold the lid back over the bottle top and seal with plain ordinary sellotape. My original version used a more secure fitting, but if the bulb blows, then it is a right pain to change.

I quite like them.
