If you fancy visiting two Victorian steam engine museums and travelling between them in a vintage bus — then you’re in luck as the Kempton Steam Museum and the  London Museum of Water & Steam are offering exactly that.

For two days during Betwixmas, both museums will be running their steam engines and offering a joint ticket for both museums, including travel between them in an old Routemaster bus.

The New Year Steam Up takes place on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st December 2024 and you can start your visit at either museum, with the bus trip between them taking about 30 minutes. In addition, on Monday 30th December the London Museum of Water & Steam will also be home to the Tramway & Light Railway Society, so you get a bit extra if you are able to visit on the Monday.

They advise public transport visitors to start their day at the London Museum of Water & Steam, a short walk from Kew Bridge or Gunnersbury stations, and catch the shuttle bus to Kempton. Those travelling by car are advised to start their day at Kempton where there is ample parking.

For the journey home, it’s about a 15 minute walk to Kempton Park station for half-hourly services towards Waterloo (18 & 48 mins past the hour).

The joint ticket, including the bus ride, costs £30 for adults and £10 for children.

At Kempton, there’s also the option for a guided tour for £3 per person which you need to add when booking tickets.

You can buy tickets for the New Year’s Steam Up from either the Kempton Steam Museum or the London Museum of Water & Steam.

It doesn’t matter which you buy tickets from, but if you want Kempton’s guided tour, you must buy your tickets from the Kempton Steam Museum.
