Tickets Alert: Tours of St Leonard’s Church tower and crypt
Next month, there will be opportunities to enter the crypt underneath St Leonard’s Church in Streatham or climb up the bell tower.
Two tours of the crypt will be held on Saturday September 7th, as part of the Lambeth Heritage Festival. Local historian John W Brown will take a small group into the depths of St Leonard’s Church’s dark and dank crypt.
There are two tours, and both are free of charge.
Note that access will be via a steep staircase.
On the same day, the local history fair will also take place inside the church, with free talks throughout the day:
11am Seven O’clock and not a Baby Bathed: Robert Holden recounts how, amid the devastation of Lambeth and Wandsworth during the Second World War, his Grandmother delivered 500 babies, to women in their own homes.
12:30pm “Deep Are the Roots – Black History Legends in Lambeth 1825-1975” Stephen Bourne, author of Deep Are the Roots (History Press, 2021), will discuss the lives of some of the pioneering stage artistes connected to Lambeth, including Ira Aldridge, Cassie Walmer, Connie Smith, Paul Robeson, Berto Pasuka and Alfred Fagon
2:00pm Henry Doulton’s ‘Lady Artists’ Dr Jane Jordan tells of the lady artists at the Doulton’s Lambeth Art Pottery which was remarkable for employing so many female ceramic designers and decorators. The talk takes us inside Doulton’s to discover why so many of these women chose long careers over marriage
3:30pm Streatham Village Streatham historian and author, John W Brown will talk about the village of Streatham and tales and facts of some of the residents and visitors to the village.

However, if you fancy going both up and down, there’s a one-off tour of both the crypt and the bell tower.
That tour takes place on Monday 23rd September at 1:30pm.
Tickets for that tour cost £5 and can be booked from here.
SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE
This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.
It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.
Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.
