Visit a Georgian home and a living Synagogue with special combined tours of both Dennis Severs’ House and the nearby Sandys Row Synagogue.
Starting with a guided tour to London’s oldest Ashkenazi Synagogue and the third oldest in the country. Sandys Row was built as a Huguenot chapel and it’s the last fully functioning Jewish community in what was once the very heart of the Jewish East End, founded in 1854.
Artefacts including a marble tablet commemorating King George V, a range of historic textiles and a reading desk cover presented by the Sandys Row Ladies Guild to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee will be on view.
After a short stroll through Spitalfields, you will visit Dennis Severs’ House, a home set out for an imaginary family of Huguenot silk- weavers from 1724 to the dawn of the 20th Century. You will wander in silence through the house’s ten rooms, each lit by fire and candlelight.
Visits will take place on August 29 and 31 and on September 5, 7, 12, 14, 26 and 28 at 12pm and 2pm. Visits will start at Sandys Row Synagogue and will last 1 hour and 45 minutes.
