Later this month the last remaining D stock train running on the London Underground will make its final trips as a public train service.

The District line D Stock train was introduced in 1980, but over the past few years, the entire sub-surface fleet of trains has been replaced by the walk-through, air cooled S Stock trains.

The last D Stock train is scheduled for all day public service on Friday 21st April, after which all the trains on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines will be replaced by a single fleet.

To celebrate nearly 40 years of service, there will be a special farewell tour on Sunday 7th May, a last chance to see these trains on the London Underground.

On the day, the special six-car D Stock train will operate as Train 755 and will travel to all parts of the District line – except the High Street Kensington to Edgware Road section. It will also visit Northfields on the Piccadilly line.

Customers will depart from High Street Kensington at 09:55, with an opportunity to alight at Northfields at 12:56 for an hour’s break, where there will be a pop up shop in the ticket office. The trip will finish at Ealing Broadway at 17:50.

Tickets go on sale on Tuesday 18th April 2017 at 10am.

Ticket prices are £50 per person and £25 for children aged 11-16 (children 11-14 must be accompanied by an adult, who will require a ticket to travel). Children under 11 are not permitted to travel on this trip.

A maximum of two tickets can be purchased per person.

    I remember the Q Stock farewell with a train mix of every type of subsurface car pre R-stock, and the lunch stop at Chesham – 1971?

    do these trips actually stop at each station or just pass through slowly without opening the doors (to avoid the great unwashed who haven’t paid 40 quid trying to board) ?

    any idea of the routing ?

    i’m guessing maybe:

    HSK – Wimbledon
    Wimbledon – Earls Court – Richmond
    Richmond – Northfields
    Northfields – Upminster
    Upminster – Ealing Broadway

      On most of the Underground all trains stop at all stations. This is because the signal spacing is designed for the train to pass the signal slowly, i.e. while accelerating from the station stop. So even when a station is closed the train slows down.

      What does this mean for the tour? I rather suspect it means the train will slow down, just to tempt those on the platform and then accelerate away. Of course even on a Sunday there are plenty of other trains, so the Special may well get stopped at the red signal at a station. In such cases I doubt the doors will open.

    I will miss the D78 Stocks. But I am used to using the S7 Stocks on the District Line. But the D78 Stocks will have a new lease of life once being converted into British Rail Class 230 DEMU D-Trains to replace the Class 142’s, Class 143’s and Class 144’s Pacers. Which I think its a great idea for what Vivarail will let the 1978 D-Stocks a brand new future with new Ford Duratorq diesel engines fitted to power the electric motors and the trains themselves with new seats, floors, lightings, toilets and other features. Plus they could be used on local branch lines in Cornwall, Devon, South Wales, Somerset, Westcountry, West Midlands, Cotswolds and East Midlands. Plus there was plans to use the Class 230’s on the branch lines in East Anglia such as-Marks Tey-Sudbury “Gainsborough” Line, Norwich-Sheringham (via Cromer) Line and Ipswich-Felixstowe Line. But train operator Greater Anglia are ordering brand new Bi-Mode trains instead that will replace the older rolling stocks in the next 2-3 years. But yes its sad to see the 1978 D-Stocks “D78 Stocks” to retire from the London Underground District Line network that it operated on the District Line for 36-37 years in London. #FarewellD78Stock

    The D78 MAY (?) Well get to emulate the 1938 stock enjoying an EXTENDED lease of life on the Isle of Wight – almost 80 years old these late survivors, and may have had a longer lifespan than the predecessor standard stock which managed 60 years
