TfL Christmas Disruptions: DLR faces 10-day closure, No free travel on New Year’s Eve

Christmas closures on the Transport for Network (TfL) services have been confirmed, with a lengthy closure on part of the DLR. There will also be no free travel on New Year’s Eve.

As usual, many services will be reduced to weekend style throughout the Christmas period, and some engineering works will be closed. The longest closure this year is a 10-day closure of the DLR between Bank and Shadwell, although services between Shadwell and Tower Gateway will still run normally.

Victoria Coach Station, Santander Cycles, rental e-scooters and Dial-a-Ride, along with taxi and private hire services, will be available throughout the festive period including on Christmas Day.

For motorists, the central London Congestion Charge will not operate from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day, with operations resuming from Thursday 2nd January 2025. The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will operate as usual across the festive period, with the exception of Christmas Day, while the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), which covers most of Greater London, will continue to operate as usual including Christmas Day.

London Underground

On Christmas Eve – Last trains will run from 21:30.

On Christmas Day – No service.

On Boxing Day – A reduced Sunday service

Friday 27th to Tuesday 31st December – A Saturday service.

New Years Day – A reduced Sunday service

London Overground

On Christmas Eve – Last trains will run from 21:30.

On Christmas Day – No service.

On Boxing Day – A reduced service will run on the Mildmay line between Clapham Junction and Stratford, and on the Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and West Croydon. There will be no service on any other London Overground lines,

From Friday 27 December until Wednesday 1 January – No service on the Weaver line between Liverpool Street and London Fields. A limited service will run between London Fields and Chingford, Enfield Town and Cheshunt.

On New Year’s Eve, overnight services will run on:

  • Windrush line between Highbury & Islington and West Croydon/Crystal Palace
  • Mildmay line between Stratford and Clapham Junction/Richmond
  • Weaver line between London Fields and Chingford, Enfield Town and Cheshunt

DLR

Saturday 21 until Monday 30 December – No service between Bank and Shadwell.

On Christmas Eve – DLR services will finish early at 22:30.

On Christmas Day – No service.

On Boxing Day to 30th Dec – DLR services will start later at 08:30. A special service will run across the DLR for the rest of the day and through to Monday 30 December.

On New Year’s Eve – A Saturday service will run during the day. Services will be available throughout the night on DLR and many modes across the network on New Year’s Eve.

On New Year’s Day – A Saturday service will run.

Elizabeth line

On Christmas Eve – Normal service in the morning. A Saturday service will run for the remainder of the day.

On Christmas Day – No service.

On Boxing Day – No service.

From Friday 27 until New Year’s Day – Some early and late services will start/finish at Stratford instead of Liverpool Street station national rail platforms. The Elizabeth line platforms will remain open as normal with access via the Broadgate and Moorgate entrances.

From Friday 27 until Sunday 29 December – No service between Paddington and Ealing Broadway. A reduced service will run between Ealing Broadway and Reading/Heathrow, and between Paddington and Shenfield/Abbey Wood.

On New Year’s Eve – A Saturday service will run. Services will run overnight, except to/from Heathrow.

On New Year’s Day – A Saturday service will run.

National Rail stations

Liverpool Street Station: Closed Christmas Day to Thursday 2nd January. Greater Anglia services will be diverted via Stratford except Stansted Express which will terminate at Tottenham Hale. London Overground services will terminate at London Fields.

St Pancras Station: From 21st to 29th December – no East Midlands Railway (EMR) services between London St Pancras and Bedford and Thameslink services will not run between London St Pancras and Harpenden.

Paddington Station: Between 27th and 29th December – no services will call at London Paddington between Friday 27 and Sunday 29 December inclusive. Some services will instead be diverted to/from London Euston, with the majority of trains starting/stopping at Reading and Ealing Broadway.
