The straw bales are back — hanging from the wobbly bridge later this month.

Early this year a bale of straw was hung from the Millennium Footbridge as required under ancient laws governing the river, and will once again dangle from under the bridge during maintenance works.

It’s an ancient bylaw of uncertain heritage that if a bridge arch is open to river traffic, but has the headroom restricted, then a bale of straw should be hung from the bridge as a warning.

Contractors working on behalf of the City of London will be conducting refurbishment works on the Millennium Footbridge for approximately 8 weeks from 21 September 2015.

So, during the daytime while the works are under taken, out comes the bale of straw once more.

Look out for it between 21st September to 22nd November.

Edit – Dates changed to 19th October – 14th December.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.
