Fancy travelling in a vintage green Routemaster bus conducting tours around London’s architecture? The National Trust had the very same thought you just had, but did so a couple of years ago, and have now outlined their itinerary for this year.
As you’re on a double-decker bus, everyone is given a headset so you hear the tour guides.
The tours also include access to buildings not normally open to the public
The cost is £36.75 for the roughly 6-hour bus trip.

The Living Tradition: Contemporary Classicism in London
Exploring the long tradition of drawing on antiquity to inspire contemporary practice, this tour includes some of London’s most important examples of classically-inspired architecture ranging from the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace to social housing. Led by George Saumarez-Smith, one of the leading classical architects of his generation, the tour will also include grand modern villas in Regent’s Park, commercial buildings in Mayfair, and proposals for the future of social housing in Islington.

The Genie Is Out: Post-Modernism in London
This tour focuses on the Post-Modern moment from the 1970s to the 1990s when many architects felt, “a release from constraint, from the design codes, the functionalism of the Modern era.” In the words of Sir Terry Farrell, “it was about colour and ornament and try anything.” Led by architectural historian and London bus driver Joe Kerr, the tour will chart its way through the city, contemplating works by Farrell, James Stirling, Robert Venturi, and Colin St John Wilson.
