This year’s free travel on London transport over the night of New Year’s Eve is being sponsored by a company that wants you to leave London… albeit only for a short while, for a holiday.

They appear to be the first time a website has sponsored the evening, and a look at previous years, where a sponsor was available, they come from two distinct areas of business.

2001 No sponsor (?)
2002 Smirnoff Alcohol
2003 No sponsor
2004 Fosters Alcohol
2005 Natwest Financial
2006 NatWest Financial
2007 No sponsor
2008 No sponsor (?)
2009 ING Direct Financial
2010 Wonga Financial
2011 Diageo Alcohol
2012 Diageo Alcohol
2013 Diageo Alcohol
2014 No sponsor
2015 Kayak Travel website

It would seem that the time of the free travel offer hasn’t changed, running from 23:45pm to 4:30am each year.

Incidentally, the sponsorship covers just a fraction of the cost — in 2003, the cost of the overnight service was £1.7 million.

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

  1. It’s also disingenuous of some publicity to claim that NYE free travel is “thanks to the sponsor”, when it would have happened anyway.
