The very first train has travelled on the extension of the Northern Line to Nine Elms and Battersea.

Two new junctions which will connect the extension to the existing Northern Line have now been completed, and the first train to travel over them was photographed on New Year’s Day.

When the extension opens in 2020, trains on the new track will join the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line via the new junction on the Kennington Loop.

Last month designs for a new underground station at Battersea Power Station were approved by Wandsworth Council. There will also be a new station in Nine Elms in Pascal Street.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

  1. Former Transport Insider says:

When “first train” is mentioned – is this a tube train running on electricity? Or is it a battery electric vehicle?

  2. Greg S says:

But this train is photographed on the old loop, isn’t it. I assume the new section will fork to the left, where the camera is.

  3. Graham says:

The extension is fenced off and not currently accessible to trains. This looks like a train going round the old loop.

  4. Andy P says:

If they are already running test trains, why is it another 2 years before the line actually opens

  5. Andrew Gwilt says:

I think the Northern Line Battersea extension could open in Summer 2020 or in late 2020.
