Plans to reopen the derelict Caledonian Tower, with its incredible views over London have moved a step closer, after Islington Council showed off revamped plans for a visitor center.
The council had commissions a wood clad building, but public feedback was, to put it mildly, rather negative, so they have now shown off a stone clad building which should be more in keeping with the architecture of the tower behind it.
In addition, a proposed canopy has been removed, and the space between buildings widened to give clear and improved views of the clock tower from the north.
The opportunity of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund presents a one-off opportunity to protect the clock tower, which is currently on Historic England’s ‘At-Risk Register’.
If the plans are approved, at some point in the next few years, it will be easier to climb up a very steep set of steps to a narrow walkway, with quite stunning views.
And a cafe to calm nerves when back down on the ground. Seems that viewing platforms are becoming rather popular. More about the Cally Tower here.

If I am correct this is the tower a couple of our cast abseiled down during the performance of BABEL a community production lead by a great theatre company based in Cornwall. There were thousands of people in the park for the performances and there were loads of pictures on the net. I will try t find them now and post a link.
